Importance of Education

Letter from the Board Chair, Paul D. Hopkins

Greetings – Salut – Alo!

Hello to our Universal Learning Centre family. I am writing to provide an update on our progress since the beginning of the year, and some exciting news about upcoming events and programs.

With the success of our two Galas in Arizona at the end of 2013, we were able to purchase a heavy-grade generator for the learning center in Ouanaminthe. Today, we maintain a stable source of electricity for the computer center. This center continues to positively affect the community particularly for the young adults during the long summer months. I will be heading to Haiti this month to meet with the staff and work on the fall events schedule at each of our sites.

During my August visit, I will be looking for a suitable location for our next learning center in Haiti’s second largest city – Cap Haitian. We anticipate the location will be larger than Ouanaminthe and provide conference rooms for community classes. We are preparing a new book request from the Parliament Foundation of Quebec. In addition, we will be seeking donations for the new computer center.

We are sad to report that Dana Jean, ULC’s Executive Director for many years, has resigned to continue other passions serving the community. We will miss her experience and guidance, but we know her spirit of giving will strongly benefit another organization. We wish her the best of luck and appreciate what she has done for ULC. In the interim, I will be filling in as Executive Director until we conduct a search for her replacement later in the year.

Attend one of our Galas:

  • Montreal, Quebec – September 13, 2014 – 6pm
Our inaugural dinner in Montreal will celebrate our successful partnership with Cultures a Partager – Parliament Foundation of Quebec. Over the last several years, Quebec’s foundation has donated more than 25,000 books for our three centers in Haiti. To quote US President Thomas Jefferson: “I cannot live without books”—without Quebec’s help, these libraries would not exist.   The festivities will be at the Courtyard by Marriott in downtown Montreal.
  • Phoenix, Arizona – October 11, 2014 – 6pm
The second annual “Courage in Learning” gala will continue with the tradition of a silent auction highlighting Haitian street art. Besides the important recognition of an individual who has overcome adversity through learning, the evening will include good food, good drinks and entertainment. We will celebrate again this year at the Phoenix Convention Center, downtown Phoenix.
  • New York City – November 8, 2014 – 6pm   Tickets to go on sale shortly
We are excited to host our first dinner in New York City. The gala features a silent auction of Haitian street art, dining and dancing. We will also be announcing our “Partner of Year” award, highlighting significant support of our organization this past year. This dinner will be at 42 West located at 516 West 42nd St. NY, NY 10036. Tickets to go on sale shortly.
