ULC-Ferrier is ULC’s third project, building a library in Haiti. All three of our sites, Pilate, Ouanaminthe, and Ferrier, are so very different from each other. Ferrier is just a 30 minute drive from Ouanaminthe but is significantly smaller. The dusty little agricultural town has an estimated 20,000 residents. The proximity of Ferrier to Ouanaminthe allows patrons to travel to periodically to ULC-Ouanaminthe to access the larger collection.
There is just one road into the town of Ferrier, and they are currently paving the road for the first time, as of Feburary 2013. We were pleased to find a site just two doors from the main street, a block from the market, with great foot traffic. The site is about 300 sq ft with four rooms and an empty yard out back. There is no electricity available, nor are there conduits.
While in Ferrier in 2012, the team interviewed candidates for hire and were very pleased with the prospects, three of whom we later hired, two who will split time between both ULC-Ferrier and ULC-Ouanaminthe until ULC-Ouanaminthe is fully staffed. We were greeted very warmly by the community of Ferrier and found that, not surprisingly, they value education and are in desperate need of educational resources. The team at ULC looks forward to being part of such a nice community and is very excited to bring the residents some hope for the future.
ULC-Ferrier opened in February, 2013.
