Paul D. Hopkins Named Chairman of the ULC Board of Directors at Annual Board Meeting[ALLEN, TEXAS – September 18, 2013] Universal Learning Centre (http://www.universallearningcentre.org), a not-for-profit organization that builds and sustains library learning centers in developing nations, announces Paul D. Hopkins as its new Chairman of the Board of Directors. Mr. Hopkins was nominated to the position, which carries a three-year term, on September 12, 2013 at the Annual Meeting of the Board of Directors, which meets quarterly.
A long-time ULC supporter, Mr. Hopkins traveled to Haiti in February 2013 with ULC Founder, Jacques Jean, and a team of volunteers to open the organization’s second and third libraries. While there, Mr. Hopkins trained ULC-Haiti staff members in leadership and networking. He traveled back to Haiti with the team to open the computer and media lab at its ULC-Ouanaminthe site in August 2013. In addition to traveling with ULC, Mr. Hopkins continually offers his expertise in the areas of strategic planning, operations and donor development.
“I am thrilled to be supporting ULC in this new role. Our message is simple and clear – help get books and learning tools in the hands of those less fortunate,” says Mr. Hopkins. “Providing learning opportunities enables us to help change lives forever.”
Mr. Hopkins brings with him the experience garnered in a long career as an executive in Information Technology, from which he retired to focus on non-profit work as well as managing his commercial property business. At Honeywell, a $37 billion Fortune 100 conglomerate, Mr. Hopkins had global IT responsibility for infrastructure and the Transportation and Aerospace business, providing leadership around a portfolio of strategic, secure and innovative solutions and services in partnership with the business. He created and implemented a Honeywell cross-functional business in Puerto Rico that now employs over 800 employees. Other roles at Honeywell include being a certified Six Sigma facilitator, Process Re-engineer for Human Resources based in Paris, France, and IT Talent Officer. Prior to Honeywell, he worked at GE and AT&T.
Truly passionate about nonprofit service, Mr. Hopkins supports organizations such as Heifer International and the Human Rights Campaign. He also works locally in Phoenix, Arizona helping young adults to obtain legal residency in the U.S. through the Dream Act/Deferred Action.
Having opened its first site in December 2009, a month prior to the earthquake that devastated Haiti, Universal Learning Centre now has three successfully operating centers, all of which are the first of their kind in their communities. The organization recently opened its first computer and media lab at its largest site in Ouanaminthe, Haiti, and is now working to provide more consistent electricity to the lab.
